Yes you CAN communicate better with your child!
“My five-year-old throws tantrums every morning, she doesn’t want to go to school!”
“My son hits his little brother really hard!”
“My daughter won’t go to bed! I have had enough!”
“My teen spends his time on his phone… I don’t know what to do…”
“I can’t talk with her anymore…”
“I am fed up with giving detention time…”
In adult/child relationships we often suffer from conflicts we get stuck in over daily life situations: meals, homework, bedtime, leaving for school, siblings rivalry and jealousy, etc…
Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish offer a number of communication techniques which can often help us get out of those situations and back to harmony.
Here are their basic principles: express clearly what we expect, and listen as attentively and objectively as we can to what we feel and what the kid feels.
They are rooted in the child’s and the adult’s abilities and skills, which is what makes them efficient. Communication becomes more fluid and varied, adult and child can relax more.
About me
I have been using Faber and Mazlish techniques for 25 years. The techniques changed the way I taught English in a secondary school (teenagers 11 to 15) half way through my career: I listened to them in a different way, my comments on papers and reports changed, the way I complimented changed, the kids worked harder, I felt less tired, more joyful.
I then created evening workshops to offer those techniques to parents and teachers in the school I was teaching in (in Sucy-en-Brie, Val de Marne, near Paris, France). I gave monthly workshops for 7 years and lots of parents shared how the techniques helped them navigate difficult situations.
Then my daughter was born and the techniques helped me navigate difficult situations as a mother!
Today I am retired, and I can help you learn and practise the Faber and Mazlish techniques, as well as a few more I found elsewhere, on a one-on-one basis. This saves time as I can prioritize the techniques which seem best suited to your situation and your personality. Most parents seem to need from 1 to 3 sessions, and the books can help along the way too.
I also use Marshall Rosenberg’s Non Violent Communication techniques occasionnally.
